How much time to I have to renew/restore my domain name?

The time available to renew or restore a domain name depends on the domain extension (TLD) and its current lifecycle status.

gTLDs (e.g. .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .me, .tv, etc.)

After a gTLD expires, the following general lifecycle applies:

1. Post-expiration renewal period

After expiration, most gTLDs can be renewed for a limited period (typically up to 30 days) at the standard renewal fee. During this time, the domain may stop resolving, but it remains eligible for renewal.

2. Post-expiration processing / recovery phase

If the domain is not renewed during the post-expiration renewal period, it may be removed from the active account interface and enter a post-expiration processing phase. During this phase:

  • The domain is no longer available for standard renewal
  • Recovery options, if available, may require a restoration (redemption) process and additional fees
  • Availability of restoration depends on the domain’s status and applicable registry rules

3. Pending Delete and release

If a domain is not renewed or restored within the applicable recovery period, it will eventually enter a Pending Delete status at the registry for approximately 5 days, after which it is permanently deleted and released for public registration.

Once a domain has reached Pending Delete, it can no longer be renewed or restored.

Auctions and third-party availability

Some expired domain names may be listed for post-expiration disposition, including auction or resale processes, in accordance with applicable policies. Participation in such processes does not necessarily reflect the final status of a domain, which remains subject to registry lifecycle rules.

Important notes

  • Timelines may vary by TLD and registry.
  • Not all extensions follow the same expiration or recovery process.
  • Fees, availability, and procedures for renewal or restoration are subject to change and depend on the domain’s exact status at the time of request.
  • We recommend renewing domains before their expiration date to avoid additional fees or loss of rights.
